a5c7b9f00b The Cortez siblings set out for a mysterious island, where they encounter a genetic scientist and a set of rival spy kids. Young agents Carmen and Juni Cortez are now full fledged spies at the OSS agency but onlyLevel 2 agents. When a top secret, all powerful device is stolen, the brother sister duo set out to retrieve it. Their mission takes them to an uncharted island where they must take on a duo of rival Spy Kids and a horde of strange monsters. Only then the Cortezes realize that their mission is all a set up to lure them into a trap. And little do they know is that their parents are also on their tail. I gave this movie a 9/10 because not all movies are meant to be top quality in everything. This movie was made to be a sequel to a cheesy family friendly movie and it did not disappoint. If you saw the original and liked it at all, this movie followed up tremendously in a very short amount of time. It was funnier, cheesier, and had a surprisingly good actors/actresses. Sure there were plenty of things that didn't make sense (cinemasins would have a field day with this), but to me that's just part of what makes it so fun to watch.

I've recently gone back to watch old movies I watcheda kid, and this is one of the ones I think held up the most. I'm a fan of the Spy Kids franchise, but when I first heard about this sequel, I though, 'Not again!' Too many movie franchises have been ruined by sequels. However, I decided to give it a chance when it came out on DVD. Well,it turns out, I liked it.

Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams picks up after the events of the first film. Carmen and Juni are now part of a whole group of international Spy Kids. However, they have some competition from the Giggles, Gary and Gerti. Unfortunately, Carmen has a crush on Gary, but Juni is wary (for good reason). Anyway, Carmen and Juni go to a mysterious island, populated by strange creatures. Also, their gadgets don't work. So, the film picks up speed, and becomes an adventure film with bizarre creatures, a not quite mad scientist named Romero (played wonderfully by Steve Buscemi), and a device that can control, or destroy, the world. Also, Gregorio and Ingrid, their parents, have come looking for them, with Ingrid's parents, Grandpa and Grandma (played by Ricardo Montalban and Holland Taylor). The film's climax is good, not overdone. And the message is still the same: Family is important.

Overall, I liked this one better then the first one. It has better performances, better gadgets, and overall, a better film. Robert Rodriguez is awesome! I can't wait to see his other films (El Mariachi, Desperado, From Dusk Til Dawn, etc.) Anyway, my rating? A solid 5 out of 5. Though it's longer and more elaborate than it needs to be, it shares its predecessor's smart but relaxed sense of humor, a sophisticated imagination and the ability to be sharp and playful without being malicious.
